Sprint (OCSRA)

The Ontario Canoe Sprint Racing Affiliation (OCSRA), formed in 1985, is one of three affiliate organizations associated with CanoeKayak Ontario (Whitewater and Marathon are the others). Representing the sport of Olympic Sprint Canoe Kayak racing, the main function of OCSRA is to implement, manage and monitor programs and activities that are provincial in scope. The primary responsibility of the OCSRA is athlete development.

In Canoe Sprint events, athletes race on a straight course, each boat in a separate lane, over four different distances: 200m, 500m, 1000m and 6000m. There are Kayak events in single (K1), double (K2) and four (K4) boats, and Canoe events in single (C1), double (C2) and four (C4) boats. Unique to Canada is the war canoe which carries 14 paddlers and a steersperson. In a Kayak, the paddler is seated and uses a two-blade paddle, while in a Canoe, the paddler is kneeling on one knee, and uses a single-blade paddle. Canoe Kayak Sprint became an Olympic discipline in 1936 and its programme includes events over 200m, 500m and 1000m

The programme for London 2012 will consist of 12 events, eight for men and four for women. The 200m events will be an Olympic feature in London for the first time in the Women’s and Men’s K1 and the Men’s C1. Women will race over 500m in the K1, K2 and K4 and Men will race over 1000m in the K1, K2, K4 and C1 and C2.
